Art Is Life
Shai made me think about my love of hip hop culture and what I feel about the youngsters who are screwing up the culture's good and the music industry that is pimping it like a mega-ho turning tricks only in gangbangs (my words--not hers). Listen and watch the godfather of the rhyme, Gil Scott Heron, as he speaks on that subject and some straight talk on some parts of his life.

I LOVE me SOME Brother Gil Scott Heron - flaws & all! ...just LOVE that MAN!
I have always been a fan of Gil Scott from way back....can't ever forget about his piece about a man's body being returned from the Vietnam War, i think the title was "Is this for real"...some 25 years later and we still asking the same question, different war, same circumstances, death.
I love that brother too. I like how he never allowed her to pin his back against the wall. She was trying to smear him as best as she could. SMH
Cap, that makes two of us! He was the first poet who made me understand that poetry wasn't just "girly words" and that a boy from the slums could speak his mind in such a strong way that people HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO HEAR IT...even when I'm whispering.
MizR, I love that one, too! Why can't I remember the name, either? Another that still makes this brain o' mine work is "Watergate Blues." If you change some of the names and drop the dates, it reads like a newscast for the Bush camp's garbage. Brotha Heron's work is timeless.
Rich, you nailed it! I love how he caught her off guard by being honest and making her get off her quick little pedestal...calmly. A lesser man would have been caught in the quick talk. BTW, am I too late for the Prosperity Game?
Oh - AND we can't forget HIS message to the messenger (still trying to figure out how to lift that from my myspace page:-)!

You know I didn't! I thought you would mention the song on your page by now! If you look through your account settings, you can disable it there or just add a different song to knock it off your page.
Ced, Wow! I am surprised that my post on my blog got folks thinking.
I did not get to see Gil because at work some things don't work on the Net (we are supposed to be working, hence blocks, LOL).
Anyway, I had head of Gil Scott but never heard him speak. About 6 years ago someone made a comment about him and she did not know I did not know about him. I just laughed at her joke like I knew. I have to admit I have not studied more about our people.
There is wisdom and inspiration in every person's words. I'm learning more and more everyday to listen. I believe that the hearts of every great writer of the past and the present beat to the rhythm of the truths they have accepted.
Just my thoughts...

Ced, u misunderstood...i'm trying to figure out how to lift Message to the Messenger OFF of my myspace page so that I can PUT it onto my REAL blog (Intimate Side). The best I could do (for now;-) was add Gil's myspace page to my list of links...
