This is dedicated to every teacher--professionally trained and spiritually gifted--who touches the lives of the young everyday. Remember: parents are the first teachers.

Shai: Hey, lady! Nice to see that pretty smile on my page! DEF POETRY is my show! I still need to replace a couple of the DVDs--I scratched them pretty badly. That's where I first saw Taylor Mali perform this piece.

Cap: You know, I saw your face the first time I watched Mr. Mali perform this one on DEF POETRY a few seasons ago. It took me back to your conversations with me about the need for change and the burn you felt at times in your early career as a teacher before we met. I never saw your passion for teaching diminish--but I felt the hope in it wain within you for a while. I'm glad that you reclaimed it...in your own way.

DC: Happy Father's Day, good brotha! Thanks for showing love!

MizR: Glad you could dig it...and how is life in your part of the world?

Thanks to all of you for showing love to this new daddy! I love you for that!

Our schools have far too many trouble points, but they are nothing like many of their complements in other countries. There is a reason that so many people from other countries bring their children to this country...
